I have never been so ashamed of my spotless finger nails, especially the celeb one. These days, I move around with my left hand in a tight fist, hiding the clean index finger and cast enviable glances at all those who dare to flaunt their voting mark. I confess, I didn’t vote on May 7. Not because there was any lack of motivation and not even because I am apathetic about the country. I didn’t vote because I was forced to travel out of town for some family emergency. Yet, the guilt rankles. I don’t claim to be a patriot or even an ideal citizen but I do believe in not sticking out like a sore thumb. And in the season where voting is the new pink, being a non-voter is a social crime. I have been punished too. On Sunday, as a drenched Delhi bloated up like a dead pig in a river, my friends, who have been inked, gave me that don’t-ever-complain-about-potholed-roads-again-look. I have been ostracized.
