Time: Sunday evening Place: Sarojini Nagar market Situation: Super crowded with wedding shoppers Suddenly there’s a commotion. A couple of open-roof jeeps speed in, flags fluttering and loudspeakers blaring. The young, bandana-sporting, body-hugging T-shirt-clad drivers screech to a halt. The police rush in, we hope to shoo them away. But the uniformed men usher them inside the market, push shoppers aside. Then the show begins. As the young men, who look more like sidekicks of Bollywood villains, keep an eye on the pretty girls shopping, a balding man stands up in one of the jeeps and starts talking on a cracking microphone. “BJP ko vote do….Vijay Jolly ko vote do.” No, he is not the BJP’s star candidate who has taken on Sheila Dikshit from the New Delhi constituency. This is his proxy speaker. “Pehle crowd aane do. Jolly saab baad mein ayenge,” a supporter explains. We expect our netas to be sincere at least once!
