It isn't WALL-E but with Roadside Romeo, Indian animation has certainly come of age. What My Friend Ganesha, Ghatotkach and even Dasaavatar couldn’t do, this mushy, candyfloss romance has achieved with perfection; expect flawless animation, smooth dubbing and foot-tapping songs. And when “learned” critics complain about the plot being predictable, “with no twist” (as one TV film critic proclaimed), maybe we should remember that its target audience is not above the age of 8 years. My 4-year-old daughter loved every “silly” moment of it — when the dandy roadside Romeo opens a new-age salon, when he falls in love with a platinum blonde Kareena Kapoor-dubbed La-i-la and when Charlei anna, the farting villain, (made memorable by Javed Jafferey’s emotive voice) thrashes the hero. She shrieked, jumped with joy and danced, comprehending every line of the movie without my help. Thank god director Jugal Hansraj didn’t make it complex!!! Time for a sequel.
